On Thursday, October 31st, 2013 Mary Linsmeier Schools-South Milwaukee, WI (MLS-SM) held a Costume Party/Health Fair from 4-6pm. On this particular day, the city of South Milwaukee was holding their annual trick or treat from 5:30-7:00pm. I decided to create this parent engagement activity for two reasons:
1. A Health Fair is a healthy alternative to trick or treat;
2. MLS- SM is involved in Active Early (Active Early is a statewide collaborative project helping childcare centers teach students (and their families) 0-5 be more active and make healthy choices. (Wolfe, May/June 2011) MLS-SW is one of twenty pilot sites that were chosen. )
Planning for the Health Fair began in August after meeting with my Active Early Technical Consultant (TC), Karen Narlow. Karen, who is from 4-C’s Milwaukee (Community Coordinated Child Care), meets with me once a month to aide me in the development of Active Early. It is very similar to YoungStar- I have to create a binder with different components and implement the components into my center. Throughout the following three months the ideas for the Health Fair came to fruition on October 31st. I knew I wanted to do a Health Fair, I knew it would be hard to engage my parents in an after school event, and I knew I wanted it to be fun.
